About Episode https://www.daviddeutsch.org.uk/ David Deutsch is a renowned University of Oxford physicist, philosopher, and the "father" of quantum computation. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society, and his work includes fundamental issues in physics, particularly the quantum theory of computation and information, and the new field of constructor theory. In 1985, he proposed a universal quantum computer and went on to make some of the most significant advances in the field, including the discovery of the first quantum algorithms. He is renowned for his theoretical advances, including the theory of quantum logic gates and quantum computational networks, as well as several fundamental quantum universality results. His work set the agenda for subsequent international research efforts in quantum computation. David was awarded the Paul Dirac Prize and Medal by the Institute of Physics in 1998 and he won the Edge of Computation Science Prize in 2005. His books are highly influential. The Fabric of Reality explores the synthesis of ideas uniting Quantum Theory, and the theories of Computation, Knowledge and Evolution. The Beginning of Infinity: Explanations That Transform the World argues that explanations have a fundamental place in the universe and that improving them is the basic regulating principle of all successful human endeavour. He has published many articles and research papers and has presented three TED talks. About Episode In this episode Conjecture Institute Advisor David Deutsch takes a deep dive into the problems that plague existing academic institutions and, crucially, the ways research (in particular fundamental research in science) tends to be funded. David explains his own experiences in finding a career in physics early in his life, how things have changed and therefore what problems now beset young researchers. David then presents a positive vision for a new way forward and how Conjecture Institute is playing a key role in the formation of a unique model for fostering creativity and making progress by providing an alternative place for research to be conducted and philanthropic support for people and projects to be directed. About Episode David Deutsch is the founding father of quantum computing. In this episode of Strange Loop, David joins Sana’s founder and CEO Joel Hellermark and Spotify’s Co-President Gustav Söderström to unpack his lifelong quest to explore the furthest reachings of human understanding. Together, they explore how knowledge creation makes humans unique in the cosmos, why current AI systems fundamentally differ from genuine intelligence, and what quantum mechanics reveals about the nature of explanation itself. What's in this episode How human creativity evolved for cultural knowledge transmission, not innovation Why large language models and AGI operate on fundamentally different principles The relationship between quantum computing and the computational nature of reality Why having billions of AGI copies wouldn't accelerate progress as expected How knowledge creation violates the basic physical rule that "might makes right" The distinction between tools that enhance human intelligence and systems that replace it Why humans are cosmically significant despite appearing small and fragile What questions Deutsch most wants answered about consciousness and artificial general intelligence The future of humanity across cosmic timescales and what makes progress sustainable — Transcript: https://sanalabs.com/strange-loop/david-deutsch — About Strange Loop Strange Loop is a podcast about how artificial intelligence is reshaping the systems we live and work in. Each episode features deep, unscripted conversations with thinkers and builders reimagining intelligence, leadership, and the architectures of progress. The goal is not just to follow AI’s trajectory, but to question the assumptions guiding it.
